Salty Cosmos

In small ships
across foreign borders
buried deep in
tidal reign,
we licked salt from
the sails
and clasped stars
out of the vast
and reflected sky.

True piracy,
our thievery was a
natural effect
of the human cause.
We sought to gather up
in our arms
what existed only
as mystic and vague.
The heavens poured
themselves in
a starry river
into our arms.

The sea's salt stung our
winded faces,
hollowed our cheeks.
We savored the
freedom it carried
up from below,
churning mountain ranges
under the hull.

A ship in quest
of what is needed,
humanity carried on
with the wind and
the stars hanging
neatly above,
tinsel cut-outs of life.

We tore down
the fishing line
and stole away the
cosmos to dwell
in our fiery pockets.
